The monastery was probably dissolved after the capture of Nicosia by the Turks in 1571 and the church was turned into a parish. Tradition says that the Turks attempted to turn the church into a mosque. But abandoned the effort because the imams who placed die in a short time by taking up their duties.

Built in 1872 within the old city walls and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was the largest church in Nicosia. The marble mausoleum to the east of the church contains relics of the bishops and priests executed by the Ottomans in 1821.
