Moondog's

Moondog's Bar & Grill has gone a long way, yet its mission has not changed since the early days: to offer a place for cool, relaxed people... people who love sports, appreciate good music and enjoy sharing special moments with friends and family, people with opinions and stories to tell, people with a rock attitude and of course a pub for people who take their burgers and beer very seriously...

Moondog is a made up name, with many musical and some sports connections.

Moondog was the adopted pen name of Louis Thomas Hardin (May 26, 1916 – September 8, 1999), a blind American composer, musician, poet and inventor of several musical instruments. He adopted the name "Moondog" in honor of a dog "who used to howl at the moon more than any dog I knew of."

Moving to New York as a young man, Moondog made a deliberate decision to make his home on the streets there, where he spent approximately twenty of the thirty years he lived in the city. Most days he could be found in his chosen part of town wearing clothes he had created based on his own interpretation of the Norse god Odin. Thanks to his unconventional outfits and lifestyle, he was known for much of his life as "The Viking of 6th Avenue". A documentary about his life, "The Viking of 6th Avenue", is in production for release in 2014.

The horns forming part of our logo were inspired by the Viking helmet worn by Hardin.

Moondog was also the nickname of 1950’s disc jockey Alan Freed, sometimes referred to as the “father of rock n’ roll”. Freed called his radio show "The Moondog House" and billed himself as "The King of the Moondoggers". He had been inspired by an offbeat instrumental called "Moondog Symphony" that had been recorded by Louis Hardin. Hardin subsequently sued him and Freed was prohibited from future use of the name.

Simply put, Moondog’s is serious food, serious beer, serious music & sports. Moondog’s features a classic American menu that includes something for everyone. The unique take on tried-and-true favorites are sure bets to please every palate with fresh, home-made offerings that will leave you satisfied.

Pure power. A bar that plays real rock music. Music that will travel you places, trigger strong emotions, bring back memories and remind you how real rock music is so beautiful and genuine.

They are not much into labelling. They don’t care if it’s Classic, Alternative, Punk, Indie or Metal. What they know is good rock music and this is what you’ll find once you step foot inside. Rock gods such as Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, U2, Pearl Jam, Tool, Metallica, Soundgarden, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Radiohead, Alice in Chains all grace their venue with their beautiful tunes. And that’s just the start of the list….Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, The Hooters, Queensryche, Live, Muse, Linda Perry, Janis Joplin, Guns N’ Roses….they play it all!!

At Moondog’s they take their sports very seriously. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the events they prefer. In addition to the traditionally popular sports events here in Cyprus, they cover other popular sports and leagues globally.

Just visit the “Events Calendar” and  you’ll find it there. If not, just call and ask.

When live action is not on, guess what? Sports never stop. Who doesn’t want to watch Michael Jordan make a free throw with his eyes closed, score 69 points against the Cavaliers or shoot his final shot for the Bulls (against Utah), clinching his sixth title on June 14, 1998?

And how about Marco Van Basten’s wonder goal for Holland in the Final of Euro 88 in Munich, Ayrton Senna’s first lap at European Grand Prix, Donington, Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield's ear in 1997, Brett Favre throwing 246 yards as the Packers beat the Patriots 35-21 in Super Bowl XXXI?

And the list goes on and on….

The restaurant is open during the whole week from 12:00 to 02:00.
